INTRODUCTION.

THE compiler, in presenting the first Guide Book to Helensburgh and neighbourhood, has had the unusual difficulty of scanty materials to contend with in its compilation. There are almost no antiquities, and few historical associations linked with the localities about which these notes are written. The places are chiefly modern in their origin, and the facts connected with them contemporary with living inhabitants. He has endeavoured to make as much of the materials as was compatible with the usual character of a Guide Book, and while thus called on to utter a note of apology, he may also be allowed to express a hope that these brief records will be found to possess some degree of interest and value to the reader. He has only to add one expression, his thanks to those who have cordially aided him in the work, and, amongst others, to the respected ministers of the Parishes of Row and Roseneath.
