ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE SAME.

Hirta, the seventh day of the first month of Autumn, in the year 1876.—We, the inhabitants of the island of Hirta, pray to make known to all who have concerned themselves in this matter, that we requested Mr. Sands, when here last year, that he should get a boat for us, in which mission (with the assistance of his friends) he has been wonderfully successful, and that he has safely delivered it to us. We also desire to say that we are greatly pleased with the boat, and that it is very suitable for the business of the island at this time ; and we gratefully thank those who assisted us for the great gift they have sent to us. Understanding that it has been suggested that a ship should call at this island twice during the year, that so we might be able to hold communication with our fellow-creatures, we hereby request and authorise Mr Sands, as our representative, that he do what lies in his power to obtain for us that convenience. If a steamer would call here twice a year, namely, in April and October, it would be an advantage, and a very good arrangement for us, and it would greatly add to our worldly happiness and prosperity ; and we are putting our signatures to this as a proof of our wishes, and of our full confidence in obtaining a hearing.
